awarded the Nobel prize since 1901 and whose names or portraits are preserved on medals in the collection of the museum. After some principal biographical data and data related to the scientific activities of the persons, a description of the medal or medals related to them will be given. After the description we will refer to the catalogues or collections in which the medal is mentioned and can be found, respectively. The medals to be listed below ara thus all pieces of the collection of the Semmelweis Museum of History of Medicine. Many of them came with the collection of medical medals of the founder of the collection Géza Faludy into the possession of the museum. Several beutiful medals are due to the wellknown historian of medicine and collector of medals Dr. Gyula Varannai. The rest was either purchased or donated to the museum. EMIL VON BEHRING (1854—1917) He was a German bacteriologist-immunologist. He was working under the guidance of Robert Koch at the Berlin Institute of Hygiene, then became professor at Marburg University. Here he founded, with the participation of some capitalists, the Behring works famous all over the world. He discovered the antitoxins against diphtheria and tetanus. In 1901 he was the first to be awarded the Nobel prize for „Iiis work on serum therapy, especially for the application of the serum against diphtheria." 1 O/ EMIL VON BEHRING: SEINES ALTERS 61 JAHRE Half-length portrait left, underneath a stick with a snake. Below MARBURG 1940 II/— Leather, in metal frame, 40 mm, 1940 On the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the therapy commermorations were held worlwide, among others also in Hungary. The medal commemorates the Marburg festivities. The badgelike fonn of the medal suggests that it was probably given to the participants of the event. Many guests arrived also from abroad. Hungary was officially represented by the hygienist Gyula Darányi, university professor in Budapest. It is assumed that Iiis medal went to the collection of Géza Faludy, and together with the latter to the collection of the museum. 3 O/ EMIL VON BEHRING 1854—1917 Head to the left.
