The introduction of silicon rubber, and from the fifties the ventriculoatrial shunt operation with rectifier valve catheters, and ventriculoperitoneal shunts introduced in the mid 1970's, have resulted considerable development. Hungarian physicians also made efforts in the treatment of hydrocephalus in the past 90 years. Today 70 % of the operated hydrocephal infants can be expected to be a healthy adult. Besides operations, improving diagnostics, general anaesthesiology, better postoperative treatment, and control care of the operated patient until adulthood, - have considerable part in achieving good results.
