Sitmmary Martinus Carceus, by his Hungarian name Karcagújszállási Márton (1646-about 1673) was an early representative of Hungarian intellectuals who grew up on Cartesian philosophy and physics and showed deep interest in new conceptions of science and in medicine. Tn Leyden, he became a follower of Íatrochemistry under the guidance of F. Sylvius de la Boë, one of the most outstanding professors of practical medicine. As a iatrochemist he distinguished himself not by indépendant researches — his early death would not have allowed for it anyhow —, but by writing an Index rerum et materiae to the most important work of íatrochemistry, F. Sylvius de la Boé's Praxeos medicae idea nova, which was very popular and ran several editions. His work meant an important contribution to the populari­ation of Íatrochemistry and helped the healing work of doctors who practiced in its spirit.
