A mű ismeretében igazolva láthatjuk, azt az elvet és gondolatot, amelyet az „Aiánló levél"-ben így fogalmazott meg Lippay: „Bizony a' kerti virágok, füvekkel főképpen egyben foglaltatván, nem csak szinek szépségével, illattyoknak drága voltával, vizeknek vett, s-égetett hasznaival (mellyeket, mint-egy Anyai tejet velünk közlenek) szemeinket gyönyörködtetik, szaglásunkat legeltetik, fejünket, szivünket erősitik; hanem orvosló erejekkel, az betegség-által el-szaladott egésségünket, visza-hozzák, meg-marasztyák álhatatossan, őrzik szünetlen, úgy hogy; Contra vim mortis, ereseit medicamen in hortis; Szörnyű merge ellen Ö' halálnak orvosságot d kertben találnak." 33 Summary The characteristic works of natural sciences of the renaissance were represented by a series of botanic — more precisely medical-botanic — works (herbariums, " Kräuterbuch"-s) being started to publish in the 16 th century. These compositions were spred in whole Europe, issued in several editions and have been translated to numerous less important languages too. The same works were used as source-books for the medical-botanical compositions, written in Hungarian language. At the end of the 16 th century — although within poor bounds — Hungary seemed to keep up with the Western European countries standing on a higher level of education and living under more favourable conditions. Besides the "Herbarium" by Péter Melius Juhász (1578) and different kinds of vocabularies and dictionaries, still three more works were issued in Hungary, of partly or entirely medical-botanical character, in the last third of the 16 th century. The general cultural standstill in the first part of the 17 th century held true of the medical-botanical works as well, so in this period not a single book of this character was published. The mutual characteristic of the works published in the second part of the 17 th century was, that to whatever field of sciences they belonged, they included more or less medical-botanical knowledge as well. The work "Posoni Kert" by János Lippay (Tyrnava-Vienna 1664—1667) is a special horticultural composition with plentiful medical-botanical parts. The encyclopedical ambitions —characterizing this age —are clearly recognizable in this book too. Due to the lack of special books of sciences, the authors discuss the connected natural sciences, medical-botanical knowledge, etc. in detail, whatever field of sciences may be in question. Up now, the book of Lippay was appreciated only of cultural-historical respect and of horticultural point of view. In the preface of the study author gives a summary of the up to date results of researches, then he mentions its medical relations in detail. In the course of the analysis of the work, he touches upon the most important nativ and foreign medicalbotanical sources too. Lippay was most vigorously impressed by the foreign authors: A.Mizaldus and P. A. Matthiolus. In home relation one can clearly realize the influence of Péter Melius Juhász's "Herbarium" in some parts of the "Posoni Kert". The attitude and stuff of knowledge of the significant and not less extensive medical-botanical parts, do not show Számozatlan 3. oldalon.
