ELŐADÁSOK — KISEBB KÖZLEMÉNYEK MEDICUS DUPLICARIUS by R. W. DAVIES D r. med. Rembert Watermann has recently published a study of the rank medicus duplicarius in the Navies of Imperial Rome 1 . In particular, he discussed the tombstone of Sextus Arrius Romanus, a member of the Italian Fleet based at Ravenna' 2 . The Latin text of the inscription is: D M SEXTI.AR RI .ROMA NI. MEDIC DVPL.N. AEGYP.V. A.XXVI.M. A.V.M.IVLI VS SOSSIA NVS.AMIC. CAR. ET.H Dr. Watermann deals with three main points: the meaning of duplicarius ; the expansion and interpretation of aegyp ; a possible parallel from the frieze of Mereruka at Saqqara. The present writer has recently made studies of the military medicine in Imperial Rome, in particula rthe doctors^, medical personnel 4 , and the medical services of the Roman troops 5 : these discussions may provide the background for the case of Romanus. The question of the meaning of aegyp may be dealt with first.
