We have no suspicions, we only feel unfortunate that it has been neglected to prepare any copies and microfilms of these important documents in the Vienna Medical Historical Institute, where the professor and director happens to be a most eminent Semmelweis expert. We only think bitterly on the fact that—on the basis of the treaty of Baden between Austria and Hungary signed on 28th May 1926 we cannot have any arguments referring to the surrendering of the material, since the documents of Viennese authorities or hospital-papers cannot be regarded as the common spiritual property of the two countries not even if they are Hungarian. There is nothing left for us but courtesy in the research of the mutual past, and putting aside prestige questions which seems to prove uneffectious even in great power politics. Mystery-making lays oneself open to suspicion which, on the other hand, is unworthy to the highly appreciated "medizinische Wien". For this reason, we present here with the writings of Hungarian authors on the subject and the original text of the correspondence. Then we withdraw, leaving the decision resting on the reader and posterity. II. ISTVÁN BENEDEK: SEMMELWEIS AND HIS AGE Budapest, 1967, pp. 389-392 "Was there any case history at all? And if yes, where has it gone? Hundred years ago it was already compulsory to register case histories in the Viennese public hospitals. It is a generally accepted view that the case history is lost. According to Gyula Regöly-Mérei, several attempts have been made to find it without any success.
