TANULMÁNYOK - Zoltán Imre: A budapesti egyetem és a magyar orvostudomány mesterei (angol nyelven)

is internationally well known. He contributed a great deal to the intraoperative application of the cystoscope. One the most ancient traditions of the Faculty of Medicine was the teaching of ophthalmology. The first department of ophthalmology was founded in 1801, its director was János Tódor Fabinyi. Later the activity of Emil Gross merits emphasis mainly for his role in the organization of the fight against trachoma. József Imre junior died very early. He was well known internationally for his activities especially in ophthalmological surgery. Among the pupils of Semmelweis, Vilmos Tauffer the pupil of Hegar should be mentioned here. He was the founder of up-to-date obstetrics and gynaecology in Hungary. He founded an important school of gynaecology and its effects were present up to the late forties of the 20 th century. His greatest achievement however was the introduction of the so called "Obstetrical Register' 1 , covering each delivery in the country and thus it was the first well organized registration of this kind in whole Europe. József Fodor was an excellent representative of public health. He became doctor honoris causa of the University of Cambridge in 1891 on the basis of his excellent studies. His department was the second of this type in Europe, having been preceded only by that of Pettenkoffer in Munich. In the year of the foundation of the Faculty of Medicine the training of pharmacists had also started in Hungary in the form of a course of 3 months duration. Among the professors of pharmacology the name of Lajos Winkler should be underlined here, the founder of modern training of pharmacists in Hungary. He opened new ways in the field of classical analytical chemistry and developed original methods of analysis. He is well known on the ground of his activity in the field of precision gravimetric gas-analysis and pharmaceutical analysis. Training in dentistry started in 1844 at the Faculty of Medicine. The first lectures were held at that time by Döme Nedelko. The first ordinary professor of dentistry was József Árkövy, whose book "Diagnostik der Zahnkrankenheiten" , edited in 1885 acquired international recognition for Hungarian dentistry. This list is far from being complete. Many of our former professors, research workers could still be mentioned here, whose names are registered on the golden pages of medical history. We could continue this by mentioning the names of their successors and excellent pupils who acquired recognition and honor for the Hungarian medical science in the last 30-40 years. They are however already our contemporaries, and it is up to the coming epoch to pay tribute to their names. Those who have been mentioned belong by all means to the greatest. Their life and work is an example for us, we are trying to continue their efforts under much better circumstances.
