KÁROLY THAN A PIONEER OF SCIENTIFIC CHEMISTRY AN D CHEMICAL EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HUNGARY by ANTAL VÉGH A t the Meeting of the Board of the Medical Faculty of Budapest on the 17th of March, 1890, EndreHőgyes, the Dean, put forward a proposal for conferring honorary doctorates at the millenial festivities commemorating the foundation of Hungary 1,000 years previous. The list, including medical notabilities like R. Virchow (Berlin), J. Lister (London), A. Retzius (Stockholm), G. Guido (Rome), E. Roux (Paris), contained only one Hungarian, who was not even a physician, but the Professor of Chemistry in the Faculty of Arts at Budapest University: Károly Than. Hőgyes in his introductory address said: "since 1860, that is for 35 years he is rendering great service to medical training by instructing the students with unflagging care in the chemical sciences, and he was the first in our country to establish and equip his institute in the spirit of contemporary medical science and according to its demands . , . Besides, Professor Than is continuosly and indefatigably taking his part in developing other medical matters asan ordinary member of the National Public Health Council, in preparing the Hungarian Pharmacopoeia and continuously revising it, as the Chairman of the Pharmacopoeial Committee. Further he is an active member of the Hungarian Medical Publishing House, of the Royal Medical Association of Budapest, and has done important research on precise analysis of our medicinal waters" [1], Károly Than thus K.
