this time in consequence of the work of Helmholtz, Graefe, Donders, Arlt, Desmarres, Bowman. At this time Ignatius Hirschler (1823-1891) - who studi­ed in Vienna and Paris - was considered as the first ophthalmologist of the country, who started in 1864 the journal: ,,Ophthalmology", which exist in our days also, and which he writes and edits quite alone. Lippay was put on the retired list in 1874 and hereafter William Schulek ophthalmologist­professor in Kolozsvár, the ex- assistant of Arlt, became an invitation for the professorship (1874-1904) with the name and work of whom the immense development of the Hungarian ophthalmology, the organization of a new clinic, the establishing of an ophthalmological library in four languages, the creation of a modern ophthalmological fashion and literature associates. The work of Schulek and his scholars - the professors Joseph Imre senior, Ste­phen Csapody senior, Emile Grósz, Leslie Blaskovics, Cornelius Scholtz, just as well as the Work of the professors Siklósy (father and son), William Goldzieher and Adolphus Szily - raised the Hungarian ophthalmology to a European level.
