SZÍJÁRTÓ ZSOLT: Greetings from Nagygörbő

ZSOLT SZÍJÁRTÓ Greetings from Nagygörbő Students and teachers of the Department for Communication and Media Studies from the University of Pécs made researches in several Hungarian small villages. The study began in summer 2005 and lasted for two years. The author himself organised an inquiry within this wider project that focused on villages located between Zalaszentgrót and Sümeg. The research frame was chosen from the classical community studies approach. A year later, however, some other students joined the project, coming from the applied art tradition. They spent ten days on the spot and with the help of anthropological research results they created art works (installations, actions) devoted to these localities. The local and thematic identity of these two fieldworks but their different approaches to the given themes bring us to a very basic question. What kind of relationship may exist between social science investigations and applied art representations? How can installations, actions and performances modify the material, produced by social science methods and purposes? Can they give to this material some new perspectives? How are science and art of space related to each other?
