Prostitution of ladies in Kolozsvár between the two world wars Prostitution is a living social phenomenon influenced by local norms, demands, judgements and stereotypes. At the same time it is effected by economic and social circumstances as well as political decisions. This inquiry focuses on the system of prostitution in Kolozsvár between the two world wars and within this topic aims to depict the construction of 'ladies'. One of the basic questions is how this concept could have marked very different groups not only in different periods but also in distinct discourses. The author does not try to construct strict definitions instead she will map and interpret relevant constructions, emphasising the fine variants with regard to roles or possible roles. Attention is paid to the social and cultural dimensions (group, class, gender, ethnicity) along which the relevant categories get meaning.
