About an aspect of strangeness of Western Vaishnavism The article is embedded of a broader context of study about the construction of strangeness concerning Vaishnavism in Hungary. As can be observed, the Hungarian Vaishnavas' newly chosen culture and world-view differ in many respects from the dominant one. Part of the differences can be traced back to the role of guru in this religious movement, which is only partly or not present in Western societies. The guru is more than a priest or religious leader, he is rather an unquestionable authority whose impact covers all aspects of everyday life. This role is further colored in Western Vaishnavism by the fact that through the influence of Western institutional forms it became more differentiated.
