KATA HORVÁTH In words and writing: a Gypsy love-letter In anthropological writings it is not unusual to contrast oral and cultures. According to some hypotheses the appearence of writing in any culture influences profoundly the everyday actions of people. This case study aims at questioning this statement. Focusing on a love-letter written by a boy in a North Hungarian Gypsy village, the relationship between the orality and written culture is examined. The author interprets the letter within the framework of the everyday communicative actions of the local community, putting them into several broader social frameworks as well. It will be shown that the letter belongs at the same time to orality and written tradition according to its function, use and style. The written form becomes here a variety of orality, that is the boundary between the two realms will be blurred.
