TÜNDE TU RAI Abduction of girls: exception or norm? The author gathered data during her fieldwork about the abduction of girls in the villages of Szilágy county in Transylvania (Romania). She investigates in the present article the background of this custom in the 20th century, the motivation of personal decisions and familial initiatives. Furthermore, she describes how the abduction of girls is related to and integrated into the normal system of local communities, despite the sanctions taken by the families, the community and the church. At the end of her article, the author makes an attempt to interpret this custom as a rite of passage, corresponding it to the model of Arnold van Gennep.
