ISTVÁN Memory of a belief story in Somoska (Moldavia) at the turn of the century During an ethnographic fieldwork in Somoska the author suddenly encountered a belief story that recounted an event of a new-born baby and his mother which occured in the village some fifty years ago. Three years later she tried to reconstruct the story with mixed success. At the same time the reconstruction work enlighted some methodological questions which are discussed in the essay. How will the mosaics of the event preserved differently in the memory of some persons in the village be put together in order to create a coherent story? How can the process of mutual remembering be described? The paper is further dealing with the question of the story's relevance in the villagers' contemporary life. What kind of norms will be highlighted in it and how is it affected by the villagers' actual stance toward the very event in the story. At the end, the author compares the story's main belief figure with some parallels.
