ANDRÁS A. GERGELY The role of rai in ethnic and regional identity The concept of region has been interpreted under a great number of aspects. This paper tries to depict it with the help of rai, a musical style which is a characteristic tool of communication in the Maghreb area since the 1930s. The author describes first its rather short history and then places it into a wider socio-cultural framework. The rai which can be easily connected to a cultural movement with strong generational oppositions has some of the features of a typical counter-culture. It provides a framework for the younger generations that attempt to abandon some or even most of their parents' particular cultural traditions yet creating a cultural tool for themselves with which a great number of them can identify without being integrated in other respects into a particular region. in 1 IN 3
