The symbols of liminality by a waterpolo team in Szeged Many anthropologist have already delt with the problem of rites of passage. These studies mostly were based on fieldwork and research in non-literate societies. The theoretical assumptions of Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner can be used to interpret the modern forms of rites of passage. This paper will examine one type of initiation ritual on the basis of fieldwork in a waterpolo team with Victor Turner's discussion of liminality and its symbolism. The function of the ritual's liminal acts is to socialize new members to the expectations and values of the community. Thus the ritual's aim is to minimize the problems caused by entering of the persons, who will be members of the community after the participation in the rite.
