SZÖVÉNYI KATALIN: Egy kőszegi szabómester házának népe
KATALIN SZÖVÉNYI A master tailor's family and household in Kőszeg This case study focuses on the composition of the inhabitants of a master tailor's house and the dynamic relationships among them in the first half of the 20th century, in Kőszeg, a town located in the western part of Hungary. From about 1910 onward, the owner's working and living space began to come together in his house. At the same time his married children decided to stay with him too. All these caused the two spheres - that of the workroom with its staff and the household to come closer. In order to analyse these processes the paper applies the terms "family" and "household". The former one mainly denotes a group in which there is a high density of activity and decision, while family is defined on the basis of kinship composition. During the period of the study we can observe some changes in both respects. Through linking these two aspects we hope to achieve a better understanding of the inhabitants' way of life.
