SZ. BURGER ALICE: LATE ROMAN MONEY CIRCULATION IN SOUTH-PANNONIA / Régészeti Füzetek II/22. (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum Budapest, 1981

2. PHASE B

2. VALENTINIAN I - VALENS - GRATIAN B/2 A.D. 367 to 375 The years 368-369 were spent in constant war by Valentinian I and Valens (the Alamanni in Gaul, the wars of Valens against the Goths). In 370 Valentinian I had a battle against the Saxones. In 374 peace was concluded with the Alamanni, but at the same time military preparations began against the Quads living in southern Germania. In 374 the Sarmatians broke into Pannónia Secunda and Valeria, and the Quads along Pannónia Prima (limes) into our province. In 375 Valentinian I came to Pannónia, where he died in the same year. On 22 November, 375 Valentinian II ascended the throne. According to the analysis of period B/2 a general setback can be identified in our material (cf B/l illustrations!). In connection with the extremely high guantitative index of the year 367 I have earlier referred to the problem due to the overlapping of the yearly intervals (cf. p 9). Besides, it should also be noted that besides the coins of Valentinian I and of Valens already in circulation the appearence of Gratian's coins can also be identified in this period. According to the data of monetary circulation in the region under survey the annual average of period B/l (364-36 7 ) is: 1840 pieces (Fig. 66); of period B/2 (367-37 5 is: 1051 pieces (Fig. 66.) The extremely large quantity of coins struck in the single AE 3 nominalia was produced in fewer mints if compared to PHASE A. In this period SIS acquired outstanding significance, this is why we succeeded in carrying out manysided investigation (besides Figs, indicated above, also 30. , 34-43) in the case of this mint. 81
