SZ. BURGER ALICE: LATE ROMAN MONEY CIRCULATION IN SOUTH-PANNONIA / Régészeti Füzetek II/22. (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum Budapest, 1981
1. PHASE A
2/b. CONSTANS - CONSTANTIUS II A.D. 341 TO 346 The curves of the stagnating data of money circulation between 337-340 jumped up in the year 341 and show a growing trend until 346. During this period the data of the treasure hoards and settlements are the most even (Figures 8-11), while the data of money circulation of the cemeteries (disregarding the peak data of the first and last years of the given period) are uneven (Fig. 11). At that time our Province was under the authority of Constans, and in 342 he was in Sirmium. In our material the coins of Constans originated from eleven mints, whereas the coins of Constantius II indicate the operation of six mints only. The polarization of the circulation of the money of the two Augusti is well reflected not only in the material of our sites but it can be observed in the treasure hoards of Brigetio, Metternich, Unterkulm, only to mention the biggest example s. While between 337 and 341 the GLORIA EXERCITUS Rev/Typ. Nr. (L3) (Q) continued to be in circulation, the dominant reverse type of the years 341-346 is Nr. (27) : VICTORIAE DD AUGG Q NN - produced for Constans by the Western mints of SIS and THE, and at the same time in a different division of labour for Constantius II, and also SIS and THE. Between the years 324-346 the dominant reverse type was the GLORIA EXERCITUS (Nr. (12) (13) (14) ); between 346-354 the coins of the type FEL TEM REPARATIO occurred in eleven variants (Nr. (T) - (To) ) - and in the years 355-364 the coins SPES REI PUBLICE (Nr. (25) ) occurred in the greatest quantity. Of the treasure hoards the material of Tedej (Barbaricum) can be identified as the earliest. Among the coins of Zsófia-manor the series of Constans and Constantius II from ARE occur together. 35
