SZ. BURGER ALICE: LATE ROMAN MONEY CIRCULATION IN SOUTH-PANNONIA / Régészeti Füzetek II/22. (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum Budapest, 1981
1. PHASE A
1/c. CONSTANT INE I (Caesars: Constantine-ConstantiusCons tans) FROM A.D. 335 TO 337 In 335 the Emperor divided his empire among his three sons. This apparently enviable solution of succession was to enter into force on 9 September, 337, after the death of CONSTANTINE I. The average 4-5 year periods of the officináé were broken around the middle by the death of the Emperor in Nicomedia on 22 May, 337. The graphs of the different types of sites between 335-33 7 show an entirely different image. The greatest variation can be seen in the case of the cemeteries (Figures 11.). The town of Sopianae and the treasure hoard of Mernye show almost identical trends (Figures 8-9). All graphs agree in that in the period following the death of the Emperor, in an insecure situation of internal and external policy, the curves of the data drop suddenly from a higher point. The Rev. type GLORIA EXERCITUS struck in the earlier period changed in these two years: Nr. (O) All functioning mints produced variant (TB) for the Emperor as well as for the three Caesars. Of these the products of the mints of Gaul (TRE, LUG, ARE) are completely missing from our material, while the products of Italy (ROM, AQU) and SIS can be traced. Of the material of the Eastern mints the most complete set apparently consists of coins issued for the purposes of the Emperor, while those in the service of the Caesars have an uneven production. Besides the Rev. Typ. Nr. (l~3) the third variant of the reverse legend appeared at that time: Nr. (14^ which was exlusively produced in the mint of THE. In our material these series can be found originating both from the mints of the Emperor as well as of the Caesars. At that time the coins URBS ROMA and CONSTANTINOPOLl/S remained in circulation, the former ones mainly in the material of the city of Pécs and of the cemeteries, and in the graves in the vicinity of Keszthely, while the coins CONSTANTINOPOLl/S occur besides the previous ones also in the material of the cemeteries of Majs, S. szil and Somodor. The types of URBS ROMA were produced by the mints of ROM, THE, ALE, but the coins CONSTANTINOPOLl/S were only struck at THE. The coin of Dalmatius Caesar occurs rarely in the money circulation of these two years and was found only in the material of the city of Pécs. 31
