SZ. BURGER ALICE: LATE ROMAN MONEY CIRCULATION IN SOUTH-PANNONIA / Régészeti Füzetek II/22. (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum Budapest, 1981

THE STUDY OF MONEY CIRCULATION OF DIFFERENT SITESIN SOUTH-PANNONIA

At the material of towns and settlement s we succeeded in analysing more closely the monetary circulation of a Roman town and its cemeteries in the case of SOPIANAE (Pécs). According to the information obtained by processing the coins of Valentinian I and Valens, and also of Gratian occurred both in the material of the Roman town as well as of the graves. But there was another difference between the monetary circulation of the Roman town and its cemeteries. The coins of the Roman town from the early PHASE A (coins from 324 to 364 ) are relatively high if compared to the total of 4228 pieces, while in PHASE B (coins from 364 to 37 5 ) it represents 5. 5 per cent as compared to the total of 13 930 pieces, i.e. it shows the highest proportion of the entire material of settlements (Fig. 54) - In the case of the cemeteries its share is proportionately the lowest both in comparison to the early, as well as to the late phase (Fig. 56). In connection with the material of the town of SOPIANAE and its cemeteries I would like to call attention also to data of Figs. 55. , 57. , 60. On Fig. 10, reflecting the monetary circulation of settlements the material of ACS - Vaspta, which may be dated to 351 - 354 can be related in all probabilities to soldiers' payment (closed find of limited items). This find, and the material of PERBAL to be dated to 346-^54 differ from information obtained from all the other sites (Fig. 10) The coins of TRICCIANA (Ságvár) belonging to the fortified towns of Inner Pannónia (though the number of coins was very small), showed such similarity with the groups of finds of SOPIANAE (town), with the closed find of ÖREGCSÉM; and with that of CEMET. (cemeteries of Majs, S. szil and Somodor) at the analysis of Mints and Sites (1st pair of questions p. 14-16.) according to which the mints were similarly represented in these finds. Also on the basis of the presently available find of GÖLLE (Iovia? - Alsóhetény-pta) belonging to the fortified towns of Inner Pannónia apparently it had a trend of monetary circulation between 363-374 which is identical to that of the town of SOPIANAE (Fig. 10). Otherwise the data of GÖLLE show close relationship with the trends of the closed finds of ÁRPÁS, ÖREGCSÉM, TEDEJ (4th pair of questions, Site - Study of years, cf. p. 22-23,). In the case of SOPIANAE and IOVIA the coins of Valentinian I and Valens occurred in a precisely identical proportion, of the coins of Gratian more was found in the town of SOPIANAE,, than in IOVIA; Fig. 61 reflects the entire monetary circulation of the settlements. In the case of mints it can be seen that SIS was followed by THE, then by AQU and CON f ROM and CYZ were represented by 4 per cent respectively. The remaining 23 per cent contains the activities of the rest of Eastern and Gallic mints in PHASE B. The proportions of the share of the individual settlements are shown Fig. 60. 141
