The majority of the household potteries are composed of thick-walled storage jars and pannier-shaped vessels. The poorly fired brown or red fragments tempered with chaff or sometimes with pebbles imply arched walled, globular shapes frequently with large lughandles on the walls (PI. 2. 3) and many fragments could have belonged to the circle of arched-necked bottles (PI. 2. 4). The unearthed find material dates the settlement from the middle phase of the note-head period of the Transdanubian Linear Pottery to the Note-head/Zseliz transitional period, which period is identical with the period of the dispersion of the Keszthely group delineated by N. Kalicz (Kalicz 1991). Accordingly, the find material contains the deeply grooved banded linear ornament of the Keszthely group, while the overwhelming majority of the ornamented pottery display a large variety of the note-head patterns. This site must have been outside the intensive contact zone where the ornamental patterns of the Keszthely group dominated. Since the unearthed area was very small as compared to the supposed extension of the Neolithic village, no far-reaching consequences can be drawn from the relationship between the features, and it cannot be decided if either a single or more settlement periods could be present. The final analysis of the pottery material and later systematic excavations will provide the opportunity to answer the questions raised by the Linear Pottery Culture and by the similarly rich materials of the other periods. Notes 1 The field walkings and the rescue excavations were conducted by Ildikó Egry, András Figler, Eszter Szőnyi and Péter Tomka, archaeologists of the Museums of Györ-Sopron-Moson county. 2 1. It surface must have been much larger formerly than at present. 4 The estimated size does not seem an exaggeration since the find material of the TLP settlement at Mosonszentmiklós was excavated on a surface of 9 ha and even this was not enough to cover the whole extension of the settlement (excavation by the author 1993-94). 5 Here I would like to thank Béla Kadenszki excavation assistant for his untiring help during the excavations on the M 1 highway and on the track of the gas pipeline through 8 years.
