Baják László Ihász István: The Hungarian National Museum History Exhibition Guide 4 - The short century of survival (1900-1990) (Budapest, 2008)

Room 19. From the Successes of Revision to German and Russian Occupation (1938-1945). István Ihász

Portrait of Lieutenant General Szilárd Bakay (oil on canvas) The Regent and his family were transported to Germany "under protection", where in May 1945 they became prisoners of the Americans. The western world did not treat them as war criminals, and they only appeared as witnesses at the Nuremberg Trials. In 1948 the ex-head-ofstate-turned-outlaw settled in Portugal with his destitute family, where they survived from a trust initiated by the one-time USA ambassador to Budapest and partly made up of donations from grateful Jews.
