The English Summary of Volumes I—II
Typical vessels of the time were the beaker and lidded ewer, whose basic form persisted throughout the 16 th and 17 th centuries, and only the decoration followed changes of fashion. In Transylvania, even the latter took place very slowly. The shape of chalices, plates, flasks and spice jars developed in a similar way, but in smaller numbers. The universality of the shapes meant that many goblets and lidded ewers were used as liturgical vessels or — in monumental dimensions — were ordered for church use. As well as being made in great quantities in Hungary, many were also imported (mainly from Augsburg), particularly into West Hungary.
