THE HABANS The German-speaking Anabaptist Habans, who lived in communities of shared property, have an important place in the 17 th century history of crafts in Hungary. The first Anabaptist communities were founded in Swiss cantons, from where they fled eastwards to escape religious persecution. After some time in Moravia, they reached the western edges of the Kingdom of Hungary in the mid- 16 th century and came to Transylvania in the early 17 th century, where Gábor Bethlen settled the first groups at Alvinc by (c. 1621-1623). Even in Hungary and Transylvania, however, they later faced persecution and enforced conversion. The Habans produced fine handicraft work. Their pottery was among the most splendid decorative ware of the period. They started making faience ware in the late 16 th century, mostly white-glazed vessels decorated with flower stems and festoons in a reduced colour palette — yellow, blue, green, manganese. They often applied the name and coat of arms of the customer and the year of manufacture. The composition and motifs of their decoration remained almost unchanged for decades, modernisation and new developments coming in only very slowly. They also produced very distinctive books: manuscript Bible commentaries and liturgical or historical texts, often very richly decorated in a similar style to their ceramics. The late Renaissance adornments of the leather bindings of Haban codices are also characteristic of their communities.
