BOOK ILLUMINATION IN lo^-l?' 1 * CENTURY HUNGARY The monumental cathedral ritual books are major, all-embracing works of late medieval illumination. The Kassa Graduale of 1518 is decorated with a harmonious blend of late Gothic and northern Renaissance styles. The codex is incomplete. The large chorus books were often broken up after passing out of use and used as book covers or archive folders. This is what happened to the Buda Antifonale and the Graduale of Máté Tolnai, Abbot of Pannonhalma, both outstanding examples of Buda miniaturist art. The praefationale of Antal Verancsics, Bishop of Eger, and the breviary of János Listhius, Bishop of Győr, are among the very few grand codices made in the second half of the 16th century. There are also smaller illuminated manuscripts from the period: the richly-decorated Kriza Codex (1531), which includes important early Hungarian text and books of prayers by the poets János Rimay and Mátyás Nyéki Vörös. Echoes of medieval graduales appeared in rarely-produced liturgical books whose illustrations were also attempts to imitate their precursors. Protestant graduales were decorated only with plant motifs. The book of songs by Ferenc Wathay, who escaped from Turkish capture, is a major text source of early Hungarian poetry and features both floral decorations and narrative illustrations. It is unique among Hungarian books. 1-12 Gradual from Kassa (Kosice) 1518 Parchment, ink, tempera, gold; 715* 590 mm; I. vol.: foil. 429, II. vol.: foil. 374 Budapest, Országos Széchényi Könyvtár, Kézirattár, I. vol.: Cod.
