I. THE JAGIELLO ERA: VARIATIONS ON DIVERSE THEMES 1-1 The Madonna of András Báthory First quarter of the 16 th century Marl; 68 * 51 * 10 cm Budapest, Magyar Nemzeti Galéria, Régi Magyar Gyűjtemény, 55.982 JAGIELLO ERA STONE AND TERRACOTTA STATUES AND ARCHITECTURAL CARVINGS Recent archaeological finds have made sensational additions to what remain of the Gothic and Renaissance stone carvings and building decorations of the Jagiello Era. An excavation by András Végh near the Fehérvár Gate in the Buda Castle district found the contents of the house of István Ragusai, royal barber, who died before 1518. The marl carvings and fresco fragments in the find prove that there were Renaissance buildings of high standard in the town even outside the royal palace. The terracotta fragments are particularly interesting: there are no previous records of pottery having been used in such quantity as the material for all'antica statues and architectural mouldings. Also made of terracotta, and at about the same time, is a set of late Gothic statues, many fragments of which have been discovered in the Víziváros district near the medieval Carmelite monastery (excavation by Judit Benda). Some more intact pieces, such as a hand, testify to naturalist sculpture of a very high standard. The finest recently-found Renaissance relief fragment comes not from Buda but from Vác (excavation by Klára Kó'vári). It is also of terracotta, but may be an Italian import, and was part of the palace of the humanist bishop Miklós Báthory or the cathedral. It ranks among the chief works of Hungarian Renaissance art. 1-2a-f Architectural fragments from Buda First quarter of the 16 th century a.
