35. Altarpiece of St Anne with the Virgin and Child, from the parish church of Radács or Berzenke. c. 1500 Around the mid-15th century, the central part ol'the altarpieces was still generally decorated with paintings, hut in the second half of the century spacious shrines with carvings became predominant. This, however, did not signal the permanent disappearance ol the former, as the altarpiece of the Virgin from Liptószentanclrás or the winged altarpiece from Csíkszentlélek are embellished with paintings only, The rise of the role of sculpture to a leading one can be traced back to the 1470s. with the emergence of carved figures in the superstructures and richly caned shrines. The side altars from Kisszeben are picturesque examples of a later development in which reliefs replaced paintings on the inner sides of the wings. il
