COURT PAINTER TO AUGUSTUS II, KING OF POLAND AND ELECTOR OF SAXONY IN DRESDEN 42. AUGUSTUS II (THE STRONG), KING OF POLAND AND ELECTOR OF SAXONY (1670-1733) Son of the elector of Saxony, John George III (1647-1691), and Anne Sophie, Danish princess, daughter of Frederick III, king of Denmark (1647-1717). After the death of his brother John George TV (1668-1694), he became elector of Saxony as Frederick Augustus I. He converted to Catho­licism in 1697 and became King Augustus II of Poland. In 1697 he was elected knight of the White Eagle Order and the Golden Fleece. In 1693 he married the duchess of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, Christiane Eberhardine. He carried on extensive building projects in Warsaw and Dresden, turning both towns into representative mo­narchic centres of the Baroque age.
