PORTRAITS OF THE DUCAL FAMILY OF ANHALT-DESSAU 38. LEOPOLD, DUKE OF ANHALT-DESSAU (1676-1747) "Der alte Dessauer/' son of John George II, duke of Anhalt-Dessau (1627-1693), and Henriette Catharina, duchess of Nassau-Orange (1637-1708). He began his military career of over five decades in the service of Brandenburg; he was present in all the major theatres of war in Europe during that time. He became the duke of Anhalt-Dessau in 1698, governor of Magdeburg in 1701, and was field marshal from 1712 and chief commander of Upper Silesia from 1742. In 1703, he was elected a knight of the Black Eagle Order. He married Anna Luise Föhse, the daughter of a Dessau pharmacist, in 1698. Adám Mányoki 1714 (?) ANNA LUISE, THE PRINCESS OF ANHALT-DESSAU, BORN FÖHSE (1677-1745) The daughter of a pharmacist from Dessau. In 1698 she married Leopold, the duke of Anhalt-Dessau, against the wishes of the duke's mother, Henriette Catharina, the princess of Nassau-Orange. Their marriage produ­ced ten children. Exhibited on loan: Schloß Mosigkau. 40. FRIEDRICH HEINRICH EUGEN, DUKE OF ANHALT-DESSAU (1705-I78i) Son of Leopold, duke of Anhalt-Dessau and Anna Luise Föhse. He went into the army at an early age. He was the colonel of the Prussian cavalry in 1732 and lieutenant 39. general from 1740. From 1744, he served the Saxon court as field marshal and governor of the fortress of Witten­berg. In 1746 he became a knight of the White Eagle Order. Attributed to Adám Mányoki 1714 (?)
