CATALOGUE THE BEGINNINGS: CELLE AND LÜNEBURG, THE HANOVERIAN COURT AND HAMBURG 1. GEORGE WILLIAM, DUKE OF LÜNEBURG, LATER DUKE OF CELLE (1624-1705) Second son of George, duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and founder of the Calenberg line (1583-1641), and Anna Eleonóra, duchess of Hessen-Darmstadt (1601-1659). He was ruler of the duchy of Calenberg from 1648, and the duchy of Celle from 1665 to his death. He travelled extensively in Italy and the Netherlands in his youth. Joining William III (of Orange), he promoted the Hanoverian succession to the English throne. His daughter, Sophie Dorothea, married George Louis (1660-1727), the son of his brother Ernest Augustus, later the elector of Hanover. GEORGE LOUIS, DUKE OF BRAUNSCHWEIG­LÜNEBURG, LATER ELECTOR OF HANOVER (1660-1727) Son of Ernest Augustus, duke of Braunschweig­Lüneburg (1629-1698) and Sophie, duchess of Pfalz (1630-1714), the daughter of the "winter king" of Bohemia, Frederick of Pfalz. He started his military career early, taking part in several battles with France, in the liberation of Vienna from the siege of the Ottomans in 1683, and the anti-Ottoman skirmishes in Hungary in 1684/85. From 1698 he was the elector of Hanover, and with the death of George William, the duke of Celle, in 1705, he inherited the duchy of Lüneburg and united it with the electorate of Hanover. When the Stuart dynasty expired in 1714, he was crowned king of England as George I according to the English parliament's resolution on succession. In 1682 he married the duchess of Celle, Sophie Dorothea, whom he divorced in 1694.
