Harald Marx: "THE LUCKY STAR OF PAINTING HAS RISEN" Painting and Art Patronage in Dresden under Augustus the Strong and Augustus III

Christian Albrecht Wortmann: Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann's Das Zwinger-Kupfer stichwerk (The Zwinger in Engravings). Engraving, 1729 Dresden, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Kupferstichkabinett also worked for Christian Louis, duke of MecklenburgSchwerin, until his death. 13 A wide variety of works were expected of court painters: Prospekte or panoramas, allegories, and monumental decorations. Silvestre was also assigned the task of painting the portraits of the electors and kings. 14 These portraits preserve for posterity the features of the rulers, and it is hard to resist drawing inferences as to their characters. Given that the prince was also typically united with his state (of which he was the prime representative, after all), we might feel as though we are stealing a glimpse of history through the monarchic portraits.
