JOHANN FRIEDRICH SAPIEHA (I68O-1751) Chancellor of Lithuania, starosta of Brzesk from 1698, castellan of Trock from 1716. The next year he entered the court of Dresden, where he became the marshal of Lithuania in 1729. Augustus III appointed him chancellor of Lithuania in 1735. As a patron of scholarship, he was interested in history. He helped to publish several books and accumulated a considerable library himself. He was elected knight of the White Eagle Order. COUNT GUSTAV ADOLF VON GÖTTER (1692-1762) A diplomat, he studied law at the universities of Jena and Halle. He was the envoy to Vienna of the duchy of Gotha from 1720, then of the Berlin court in 1732-1736, and later of the duchy of Württemberg. He was appointed privy councillor by Frederick William I in 1728, and grand marshal of the Prussian court in 1740. Decorated with the Alexander Nevsky Order by the Russian tsar in 1727, and with the Black Eagle Order by the Prussian king in September 1731, he became the first person of low birth to be thus distinguished. In 1724 he received the title of baron, and in 1740 that of count. Withdrawn from the life of the court for awhile, he purchased the castle of Molsdorf near Gotha in 1734, where he accumulated a considerable picture collection. A favourite socialite, he was also a member of the secular order founded in the Gotha court, "Ordre des Heremites de bonne humeur." In 1743 he became the intendant of the Berlin opera. BARONESS SWIHOWSKA, BORN GRUNDMANN A member of the old Czech families of barons Reisenberg and counts Swihowski, and of the Grundmann family of Silesian origin, known from the 17 th century.
