In early July, Károly Patkó returns to the Nagybánya painters' school; István Szőnyi is given an Academy grant to study under Károly Ferenczy in Nagybánya; Deli, Jándi and Pál Pátzay also visit the Artists' Colony. Károly Patkó enrolls in the teacher train­ing course of the Academy of Fine Arts. In the Autumn, Istvár Szőnyi and Vilmos Aba-Novák, together with some of their other fellow students, join the army. István Szőnyi and Vilmos Aba-Novák fight on the frontlines. In June Aba­Novák's right shoulder is seriously wounded during the fighting in Galicia; he is moved to an army hospital in Budapest. Szőnyi returns from the frontlines with serious pneumonia. The National Radical Party is estab­lished under the leadership of Oszkár Jászi in June. Gavrilo Princip assassinates Francis Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo on June 28. The Austro-fdungarian Monarchy declares war on Serbia on July 23. With Germany, Russia, England, and France entering war in the course of July and August, World War I breaks out. 1915 Italy declares war on the Austro­Hungarian Monarchy in May. Lajos Kassák launches his magazine A Tett (The Act) on November 1 . 1916 In January, Károly Patkó is enlisted; he spends 1 5 months on the frontlines before he is discharged. István Szőnyi is treated for tuberculosis in the sanatorium of Tátralomnic (today: Tatranská Lomnica, Slovak Republic) where he meets Imre Nagy; after the treatment Szőnyi resumes active duty at Kolozsvár (today: Cluj, Romania). In August, having recovered from his injuries, Vilmos Aba-Novák Vilmos returns to the front. Erzsébet Korb exhibits three oil paintings at the Winter Show of the National Salon. The Youths' (Fiatalok) Exhibition is opened at the National Salon in April. On grounds of "pacifism" and "insulting the nation", A Tett is banned on October 2; Kassák launches his new magazine MA [Today] on November 15. Francis Joseph dies on November 21 ; Charles IV is crowned Hungarian King on December 30.
