LÓRÁND BERECZKY: The First Fifty Years - 50™ ANNIVERSARY OF THE HUNGARIAN NATIONAL GALLERY - Krisztina PASSUTH: Back Home Again: The Paris-Budapest Odyssey of the Tihanyi Estate
6 I told my recollections of these events at the launching of Majoros's Tihanyi Lajos írásai és dokumentumok in the building of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on November 22, 2002. It was published in: Majoros. Tihanyi Lajos. A művész és művészete, op. cit. (see Note 3), pp. 478-479. 7 Hungarian National Gallery Documentation Dept., reg. no.: 863-20-1970. 8 There were 178 works in the list she attached. Anna Oelmacher even wrote an article on her visit: "Tihanyi Lajos (1885-1938). Látogatóban Párizsban életmüvénél." In: Magyar Nemzet, August 13, 1968. Reprinted in: idem. A szocialista képzőművészet nyomában. Budapest: Kossuth Kiadó, 1975, pp. 113-115. 9 HNG Doc. Dept., reg. no.: 863-10-1970. 10 HNG Doc. Dept., reg. no.: 84447-1970. This letter includes the list mentioneda mere rough-and-ready list including but 45 items with no mention of techniques and sizes. 11 D. Fehér, Zsuzsa. Jelentés a párizsi Tihanyi kiállításról. Budapest, April 21, 1970, HNG Doc. Dept., reg. no.: 863-313-1968. 12 Déli Hírlap, Népszabadság, Magyar Nemzet issued articles on the exhibition on April 8, 1970, the Esti Hírlap on April 9. 13 This is somewhat contradicted by the fact that, to the best of my knowledge, there were no engravings in this material, but there was a great number of photos. 14 D. Fehér, Zsuzsa. Jelentés a párizsi Tihanyi kiállításról, op. cit. (see Note 11 ). 15 XX. századi magyar származású művészek külföldön. Műcsarnok (Arts Hall). 1970. The exhibition displayed not only the works of fine artists (Etienne Beöthy, Márta Pán, Lajos Tihanyi, etc.), but also photographers (Brassai and André Kertész) and architects (Marcell Breuer). 16 Feljegyzés a Kulturális Kapcsolatok Intézetének. Tihanyi Lajos hagyatékának hazaszállítása tárgyában [...]. HNG, Documentation Dept. The memo to the Institute of Cultural Relations on the transportation home of the Tihanyi estate states that the Ministry of Cultural Affairs has brought the decision to transfer the budget fund for the seven-day mission originally provided for the HNG to the Museum of Fine Arts to collect the material of artists living abroad; the document has no date, no signature, no registration number. 17 Passuth, Krisztina. A Nyolcak festészete. Budapest: Corvina, 1967; L'Art Hongrois du vingtième siècle. Le cercle des Huits et des Activistes. L'exposition a été réalisée par Krisztina Passuth et Márta Kovalovszky. Texte d'introduction Krisztina Passuth. Székesfehérvár, Galerie István Csók, 10 octobre - 31 décembre 1965. Székesfehérvár: Fehér M. Ny., 1965. 18 I called Valéria Majoros's attention to the Tihanyi paintings in the Musée d'Art Moderne, and she did manage to trace and identify them there. 19 Earlier on, I had thought, obviously due to being misinformed, that this had been Tihanyi's military kit box. But this is refuted by the fact that Tihanyi had never been a soldier. 20 Upon returning home. I handed over the works mentioned to the Department of Prints and Drawings of the Museum of Fine Arts, namely: Composition, 1930s, collage, 123x83 mm, signed below right: H. N., inv. no.: 72.4 K; Composition. 1930s, collage, 207^148 mm, signed below right: H. N., inv. no.: 72.5 K 21 See the papers on this: HNG Doc. Dept., reg. no.: 863-20-1970. 22 Passuth. "La carrière..." op. cit. (see Note 5) 23 Tihanyi Memorial Exhibition, HNG, March 1973. A catalogue in Hungarian and French was published with an introduction by Zsuzsa D. Fehér and Brassaï's commemorative words at the 1970 Paris exhibition. 24 During my researches, Lívia Orbán (Mrs. Lakos) came to my aid with particular skill and helpfulness, for which 1 owe her many thanks. 25 Since no catalogue of the contents of the chest was ever made, it is only from the date of registration (1973 and sometimes 1974) that we can infer that a given Tihanyi document went into the collection from the Tihanyi chest. 26 She is probably Mrs. Fred M. Harphan, who sent her letters and notes in French first from Paris (79 Rue Notre Dame de Champs), then her "transatlantique" journey, then finally from Ohio. See HNG Archive, inv. no. 18856/1973, and Cécile's correspondence, HNG Archive, inv. nos: 18858/1973, 18861-18863/1973. 27 Cécile's letter to Tihanyi dated January 2, 1929, reads: "Vos magnifiques dessins ont été détruits, brûlés [7] complètement." HNG Archive, inv. no.: 18791/1973. Written in a spontaneous, faltering French style, it is quite revealing on the character of its writer. 30 In some of its details, this confession is identical with the "Autobiographie" Tihanyi drafted on a sheet of paper with the Periszkóp letter-head in Hungarian in February, 1927. which is preserved in the literary remains of György Bölöni. National Széchényi Library Archives, Fond 198-1. First published in: Bölöni, György. Képek között. Ed. by Erki, Edit. Budapest: Szépirodalmi Kiadó, 1967, pp. 597-599. 31 Tihanyi Peintures 1908-1922.
