NEW ACQUISITIONS, NEW RESULTS - Gábor ENDRŐDI: St. Sebastian, place of origin unknown, ca. 1515-20

NEW ACQUISITIONS, NEW RESULTS GÁBOR ENDRŐDI St. Sebastian, place of origin unknown, ca. 1515-20 ST. SEBASTIAN, PLACE OF ORIGIN UNKNOWN, ca. 1515-20 (Colour Plate III, 111. 1) 61 cm Inv. no.: 53.580 The National Museum purchased this statue in 1926; and according to the relevant inventory entry, the former owner had been Gábor Pettenkoffen, a resident of Budafok and unknown as a collector. Later the classification of the statue was based on this 1. same entry, which stated: "It turned up from a private owner in Lőcse. Originally, it had been in the Mateóc church in Szepes county." 1 The museum obviously based its account on the communication of the seller, but it is not clear what source the latter had drawn on. In the beginning of the 19 th century, there certainly had been an "old" St. Sebastian statue in the sacristy of the Roman Catholic parish church of Mateóc (Matejovce, Matz2. St. Sebastian from the altar of St. Simon and St. Jude (?), completed in 1518. Holy Trinity parish church, Mosóc Photo: Bratislava, Pamiatkovy úrad SR
