ACCESSION LIST OF THE COLLECTIONS IN THE HUNGARIAN NATIONAL GALLERY 1989-1990

from the 1940s (works of Gitta Mailász and Erzsébet Rusznyák) as well as from the 1950s (Mátyás Gál). We could collect a very good and significant group of political and cultural posters showing the historical changes in 1988-1990; they were on display on the exhibition entitled "The Signs of Change". A poster group is linked with this which consists posters made for various alternative programmes of young people and shows daring and uncommon stylistic solutions. COLLECTION OF SCULPTURE The collection increased with 149 works in 1989-90; there are some characteristic works among them from the turn of the century. The most significant is a double-portrait, a nice example of the sculpture of art nouveau, The first confession by Ödön Szamovolszky (Inv.No. 89.100-N). The artist died young and left a small oeuvre behind. The sculpture by Gyula Be tien, the Peasant couple sitting on a bench (Inv.No. 89.105-N) and the relief by Ede Teles, Nothing is sweater than honey (Inv.No. 89.104—N) are typical pieces of folk (rustic) genre. The latter one was very popular and several copies of it were well-known. The Turkish maiden with pitcher (Inv.No. 90.1-N), a small bronze sculpture, proves the strong etnographical interest of the period. Its creator, László Beszédes lived an adventurous life and made several trips to Asia and Africa. The Portrait of Imre Madách (Inv.No. 90.2-N) by Miklós Köllö and the Bust of a man (Inv.No. 90.35-N) by Barnabás Holló were made also at the turn of the century. The sculpture of a Kneeling woman (Inv.No. 89.102-N) by Ernő Jálics and seven sculptures of Dezső Erdey which came from his inheritance as a present, represent the sculpture between the two world wars. The son of the sculptor Lenke Földes sent a collection of 95 works to the Hungarian National Gallery as a present. 32 sculptures were rescued to store rooms of the Gallery from János Istók's legacy. Mainly busts made of plaster and monument sketches are included in this collection. MEDAL CABINET The increase is 78 items. The present of the Numismatica Hungarica in Frankfurt, a collection composed of 14 silver and gold medals related to the Hungarian revolution in 1956 is outstanding among them. Another significant gift was the series which was donated by the widow of Andor Mészáros who lived in Australia. This is the medal-version of the Calvary-series made by the artist for the Canterbury Cathedral. The medal of Erzsébet Korzáti by Béni Ferenczy is similarly outstanding from the new acquisitions (Inv.No. 90.1-P). COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY WORKS OF ART The collection increased with 446 works of art in 1989-90. There are 132 paintings, 242 prints and drawings, 36 sculptures and 36 medals among them.
