SHELEST, Dmitri: Franz Anton Maulbertsch: „Christ on the Cross". Oil Sketch in Lviv (Lemberg)
Idem: Maulbertsch in Lemberg. 22-27. no. 2-4. Comparing this brilliant and bravo ura bozzctto with authentic oil sketches by Winterhalter (Lviv, Brno, Vienna, Munich), it is hard to find a reason against the attribution of the sketch to Maulbertsch, its handling shows greater skill and sensitivity than that of Winterhalter's, and I would therefore attribute it to an artist of greater stature. 7 See Garas 1960, no. 219, ill. 192. Compare also the artist's fresco with the Crucifix at the Cathedral Church in Győr, 1773. (ibid. 220. no. 269, for the ill. see: Franz Anton Maulbertsch und sein Kreis in Ungarn. Hrsg. Hindelang, E. Museum Langenargen am Bodensee. 1984, 44. ill. 28.) 8 Garas 1960, no. 247-249. ill. 215-217. 9 Ibid. no. 274, 261. ill. 219, 222. 10 Garas, K.: Franz Anton Maulbertsch. Neue Funde. Garas supposes that the subject of this fresco was the legend of St. John Nepomuk. See: Garas 1960, 209. no. 139. The fresco was destroyed in 1785. 15 An altarpiece with the subject „Christ on the Cross" was in fact documented as having been painted for the Lichtenthaler parish Church, „Fourteen Holy Intercessors", in Vienna in 1772, but after its substitution in 1832 with the painting of Leopold Kupehvieser, this work got lost. Its connection with the Lviv sketch can hardly hypothesized. See: Garas 1960, 221. no. 271. (dating 1773), Idem 1974, 252. (dating 1772).
