Tanulmányok - Vörös Éva: Egy sivatagi lóvásárló expedíció fényképei

Photographs of a desert expedition of horse purchase ÉVA VÖRÖS The paper gives an overview of horse-related photographic material kept in the Original Photograph Collection of the Museum of Hungarian Agriculture, with special attention given to the groups of photos by particular photographers, such as Ede Ellinger, Mór Erdélyi, Gyula Jelfy, Berta Waltner and Nándor Hajba. Most of the photographs depict animal shows and manorial studs. The reader will get acquainted with the foundation of the Arabian stud of Bábolna, for which original Arabian stock was developed. Several expeditions were undertaken in the 19th century with the goal to acquire fast and attractivelooking horses for the military. Our museum keeps three albums containing the photographs taken during the 1902 expedition led by the Lebanese-born Hungarian Colonel Michael Fadlallah el-Fedad. The nearly 300 photographs may serve as a travel account as they give an insight into the daily life of an expedition. They also present a record of the lifestyle of Arab tribes in Mesopotamia. With the aid of the original captions and in the knowledge of dates and geography, the data concerning the participants and the purchased horses can be precisely identified. Consequently these photographs have a particular value not just for the history of photography but also for breeders. Fourteen horses were acquired by the Bábolna Stud as a result of the expedition. Our collection also contains an album of photographs shot by Ede Ellinger, depicting the horses shortly after their arrival to Bábolna. The double photographs are witnesses to the fact that Colonel Fadlallah had an eye for selecting those horses which later formed the basis of the most oustanding Arabian Stud in Europe. 1. kép.
