MMgMK The Effect of the Change of Regime (1990) on the Development of the "Matter of Herbs" in Hungary ÁGOTA WOHLNÉ NAGY The effect of the change of regime on the development of the matter of herbs is presented by means of Szilasmenti Farmers' Agricultural Co-operative (MGTSZ). The production of herbs in Hungary goes back to the past. In the 1920s herbs were already planted in an organized form. In the 1960s the farmers' agricultural co-operatives came into existence in Hungary. Szilasmenti was the most famous co-operative which became specialized to planting herbs. It was recognized that euryoecic herbs much in demand can be raised successfully on soil of bad quality, which was not suitable for planting cereals and other field crops. The success of the farmers' agricultural co-operatives lay not only in the plants which were chosen but also in the elaboration, i.e. various products were made of herbs on the spot which were successful and wanted for many years. The change of regime in 1990 forced the most agricultural cooperatives to make changes by turning to reprivatization and compensation methods. The study presents not only the pressure of outer circumstances but also the inner problems which contributed to the disintegration of the agricultural co-operatives . As a member of the EU we must rely on our national treasure, the Hungarian herbs of excellent quality. The technology of their production is mostly well elaborated and recognized. Szilasmenti Farmers' Agricultural Co-operative played a very improtant role in this for decades.
