Peasant society and collectivization in Veszprém county (1948-1956) GYÖNGYI FARKAS Despite the widely held view that in dictatorships like the Rákosi-regime there could hardly be anything to hinder the central power in achieving its goals, according to historiographical findings Hungarian peasant society, deprived of legal forms of enforcing its interests was still able to resist, mostly by the means of illegal practices, those resolutions of the authority which hurt its interests. The author, analysing the collectivization in Veszprém county in the period 1948-56, tries to find the forms of self-defence applied by peasantry in the county, and also, the influence of local social and political circumstances on the success or failure of this self-defence.
