MODEL FARM OF AN INSTITUTION OF AGRARIAN EDUCATION: KESZTHELY (1865-1945) GY. FEHÉR The vocational school in Keszthely endeavoured to add practical guidance to theoretical education, in the production hues of plant production, animal husbandly; horticulture and viticulture, on the lands under its administration. Another important duty of the model farm was to provide farmers with propagation material and breeding animals. Beyond performing this double duty, it was obliged to achieve maximum profit. In this respect it can be ascertained that viticulture and animal husbandry were always successful, also from the aspect of profitability. During the eight decades under investigation the model farm not only served as a scene of the acquirement of up-to-date knowledge for nearly 7,000 students, but it also contributed through its practical activity to raising the level of Hungarian plant production, viticulture and animal husbandry. Its example proved that it was possible to persue up-to-date farming even when conditions were not optimal.
