Lerche, Grith: Recent datings of Danish ploughing implements by the radiocarbon method

correction later. This correction has actually not yet (i.e. Spring 1971) been published/ 4 but it is completed and will appear this spring. 5 When publishing the result of a dating of a sample after this method, the sample number and the registrationletter for the laboratory, e.g. "K" for Copenhagen, is always added to the radiocarbon date together with a margin for uncertainty i.e. + 100 years in relation to the given date, and this is always before present, i.e. before 1950. Then the date converted into years before or after the Christian era is given. This should be wellknown facts about the principles of radiocarbon dating. Through the Commission for Research on the History of Agricultural Implements and Field Structures appointed by the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, we have achieved the datings by the C— 14 method for several of the many ploughing implements which have been found in Denmark. The datings are done at the Radiocarbon laboratory at the National Museum in Copenhagen. The Danish collection of prehistoric and medieval wooden ards and wheel-ploughs we must assume to be the greatest in the world with 11 prehistoric ards, about 10 wooden shares and 5 medieval wheel-ploughs. The datings of some of these implements will be of importance, not only in establishing an age for the single object, but for the chronology of ploughing implements as a whole, since the dates obtained stretch from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages and thus the implements themselves throw light on a long period in the development and typology of the plough. 11 of the implements have been C —14 dated within the last 10 years, and other will be treated in the future. «JOHNSON, F.
