Dr. Eperjesi László CSc - Dr. Krámli Mihály PhD: Magyarország és Fiume kapcsolatai 1779 és 1918 között

László Eperjesi - Mihály Krámli THE RELATIONS OF HUNGARY AND FIUME BETWEEN 1779 AND 1918 Empress Maria Theresa attached the city of Fiume in 1779 as a separatum corpus directly to the Kingdom of Hungary. Being the only seaport Fiume was very important for Hungary. Int he 1840s there was a plan to build railway between Vukovar and Fiume, supported by Lajos Kossuth. Between 1848 and 1868 Fiume belonged to Croatia. From 1870 until 1918 Fiume was governed as separatum corpus again. The port underwent a tremendous development after 1873, fueled by heavy Hungarian investment. The railway connection between the city and Hungary opened also in 1873. The industrial development of the city included the first industrial scale oil refinery in Europe, the first torpedo factory in the world (Whitehead), and the greatest Hungarian shipyard (Ganz-Danubius). 86
