Zsuzsa Frisnyák CLOSING OF RAILWAY LINES OF LOW TRAFFIC DURING THE KÁDÁR EPOCH Between 1968 and 1982 a total of 634 km normal, 360 km narrow gauge and 672 km agricultural railway lines were liquidated in Hungary. The program of closing railway lines was in the crossfire of controversial in­terests. In general, all the interested parties accepted that the railways had to be operat­ed in a more rational way. They did not deal with the multiplying effects of discontinu­ing railway lines. 109
