GYULA KORMOS: BELL TREASURES OF SOPRON AND THE SURROUNDING ONE-TIME SURF VILLAGES A great part of the churches in Sopron and its surroundings were built in the 13-14th centuries. Some of them stand on even earlier foundations dating from the Romanesque period. The second largest bell of Sopron, the St. Michael bell from St. Michael's Church chimes "1 am coming up for the old bells cast in 1496 and 1837." During the 3 rd Conference on the History of Bell Casting organized in Sopron in 2001, a survey was performed in Sopron and its surroundings with the aim of presenting the activities of the Seltenhofer bell-casting dynasty. However, the one-time surf villages in the immediate surroundings of Sopron were partly omitted from it. The survey carried out in 2004 filled up this gap.
