GYULA BATÁRI: ON ISTVÁN SZABLIKS BALLOON EXPERIMENTS István Szabiik (Kunszentmárton, 1746 - Kalocsa, 1816) had studied at the Piarist school in Szeged, then entered the order in 1762. Thereafter he pursued his studies in Nyitra, where he also was ordained. Later he taught history and physics at several secondary schools of his order. In the meantime he started dealing with aerodynamics. Not much after the experiments of the Montgolfier brothers, in 1784, he assembled, at his own expenses, a relatively small balloon from eighteen bovine bladders. Szabiik performed public balloon experiments three times in Pest, the last one took place on August 22 with all solemnity before a broad public and in the presence of the town council. The contemporary press, among others the paper "Magyar Hírmondó" (Hungarian Messenger), reported on the outstanding event. In 1785 Szabiik became director of the Szeged Piarist school, where he assembled and sent up another balloon. In the years that followed he dealt, in the first place, with the school's problems. After the death of King (Emperor) Joseph II he stopped theaching of the German language at his school. As a consequence, the Council of the Governor-General ordered his dismissal. Thereafter he was first commanded to the convent in Nyitra. In the course of his further life he was teaching at several schools. In 1806 he was appointed head of the convent in Nagykanizsa, then became vice-rector in Kalocsa which post he held until his death on May 12, 1816.
