GÂBOR PALLÔ: GERMAN-HUNGARIAN RELATIONS IN SCIENCES IN THE 20TH CENTURY Traditionally, Hungarian science belonged to the periphery of German science. The Hungarian institutional system of science was constructed during the 19th century, and it copied the German pattern. Even the most important personal relations tied the Hungarian scientists to their German colleagues. These relations were established during their studies in German universities. In the 20th century a new phenomenon occurred: many significant Hungarians did not return from Germany after their graduation, or, if they returned, after a short while they went back again to Germany to begin a sometimes very successful career, like in the case of John von Neumann, Leo Szilárd, Eugene Wlgner, George von Hevesy, Thedore von Kármán, Michael Polányi, Edward Teller and other great personalities of the 20th century science.
