from 2. 46 Four papers from the Department of Sanitary Engineering were written by, or with the participation of, Györgyné Homonnay 47 , then assistant lecturer, now Head of Department, whose career will be dealt with below. One paper each came from the Department of Fine Mechanics and Optics 48 and the Department of Technical Mechanics. 49 The two oral presentations came from the first two departments mentioned. 50 Only 3 out of the 7 written works and 1 out of the 2 oral presentations enlisted had but 1 (female) author each, the rest were written with co-authors. Györgyné Homonnay (Gabriella Homonnay-Markó) was born in 1935. She graduated from Budapest Technical University in 1958 as mechanical engineer. Ten years later she acquired yet another university degree as engineer-teacher. She obtained her university doctor's degree in 1966, became Candidate of Technical Science (CSc.) in 1972 and obtained a Ph.D. degree on the basis of her CSc. title'. Her brilliant career comprises a lot of steps: 1. Research Institute of the Paper Industry (research engineer, 1958-60); 2. Design Institute of the Light Industry (design engineer, 1960-1962); 3. Budapest Technical University, Department I of Sanitary Engineering (assistant, assistant lecturer, docent, 1962-1991); Ministry of Public Works Kuwait (expert engineer, 1984-1990, while on unpaid holiday from the University); 5. During the Iraqui invasion of Kuwait leader of the Product Development Section of Fégtherm Ltd. (a company dealing, among others, with central heating equipment and installation, 1990-1992); simultaneously part-time docent at Department I of Sanitary Engineering of Budapest Technical University; 6. Department of Sanitary Engineering of the Technical College Faculty of Kossuth Lajos University of Science, Debrecen (Eastern Hungary) /college professor, Head of Department, part-time from 1994); 7. Head of the Department of Sanitary Engineering of the Institute of Mechanics at the Technical College Faculty of Kossuth Lajos University of Science, Debrecen (full-time, from 1998 on). Her scientific activities, which include books (partly published abroad), papers and oral presentations, deal with heating and district heating problems. She is one of the women, who brought honour to Hungary by getting an important job abroad and by performing it to the greatest satisfaction of her employer. Her life shows also that women should not fear to change jobs until they find the kind of work best suited for them. 51 At the Faculty of Chemical Engineering works written by women or with women's participation came from 9 Departments, the oral presentations from 6. According to the nature of the discipline, most work was achieved by teams. This appears also in the great number of authors of individual papers or presentations. Most women were, in the first place, co-authors of the respective heads of departments. The Department of Applied Chemistry contribujed 2
